Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) sophomore defenseman Chris Casto has signed an entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins, the team officially announced on Tuesday morning.

Reports started to circulate Monday night about the signing and were made stronger when Casto tweeted his thanks to the UMD program and the Duluth community.

"I would like to thank my teammates, the Bulldogs organization, and Duluth for my time here," Casto tweeted on Monday night. "It has truly been an honor to be a Bulldog.

Some of Casto's teammates also used Twitter to congratulate their former teammate on turning pro.

"Couldn't be happier for @FidelCrusto [Chris Casto] getting to pursue his dream," freshman goaltender Alex Fons tweeted. "Good luck out east and don't forget us little people!"

"Good luck @FidelCrusto [Chris Casto]," sophomore forward Adam Krause tweeted. "Good luck buddy!"

Casto played in 36 games during the 2012-13 season with UMD, totaling three goals and six assists while skating primarily in the second defensive pairing.

His production as a sophomore was slightly off the pace of his freshman season, in which he tallied two goals and 11 assists and finished with the best plus-minute rating (+21) of any rookie blueliner in the country.
