Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Florida International University (FIU) head coach Richard Pitino has reached a verbal agreement to become the next head men's basketball coach at the University of Minnesota, the school officially announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The news comes more than a week after University of Minnesota athletics director Norwood Teague fired Tubby Smith, leaving vacant the Gophers' head coaching position.
Pitino is the son of Rick Pitino, one of the most successful coaches in NCAA basketball who this year has his Louisville team in the Final Four.
Spending just one season with FIU, Pitino helped the Golden Panthers to an (18-14) overall record and an appearance in the Sun Belt postseason tournament semifinals.
Details of the contract are still being worked out between the two sides, with an official introduction and news conference expected to happen later this week.
