Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Former Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders has turned down an offer to become the next head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, that according to a report on Saturday from ESPN's Andy Katz.

Katz's report cites an unnamed source with direct knowledge of the situation, with that person saying Saunders will not take the vacant coaching position left after the firing of Tubby Smith.

Saunders also coached Detroit and Washington in the NBA, posting an overall regular season record of (638-526) during his 16 years behind the bench.

An alumnus of the University of Minnesota, Saunders is now currently serving as an NBA analyst for ESPN.
