Randolph, Smalley are Winners of Mariucci Award
Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Duluth East's Mike Randolph and Duluth Denfeld's Kevin Smalley have been named by the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association as this year's winners of the John Mariucci Award, given each year to the state's best head coach.
Randolph is the winner in Class AA, who led the Greyhounds to a third place finish in that program's fifth consecutive appearance at the state tournament.
It marks the first John Mariucci Award for Randolph, who earlier this season earned career win number 500 with his team's victory over Northland rival Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.
Smalley, meanwhile, is the Class A recipient of the award after leading his team to the Section 7A championship game in an effort to earn the program's first state tournament trip since 1989.
It's the second time Smalley has earned the John Mariucci Award, with the other coming following the 2009-10 season.
Hunters assistant coach Bryan Lent was also honored by the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association, named the assistant coach of the year in Class A.
