Ripton, VT (NNCNOW.com) --- St. Scholastica senior Jeremy Hecker and sophomore Sharmila Ahmed each did something on Thursday no other Saints skier had ever done, and each finished 39th in the first race of the 2013 NCAA Division III cross country skiing championships at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vt.
Hecker was making his third appearance at the NCAA championships, more than any other St. Scholastica skier before him. He would struggle through the men's 10-kilometer classical race, finishing 39th in a time of 28:41.
Ahmed, meanwhile, became the first female skier from St. Scholastica to ever compete in the NCAA championships, finishing 39th in the women's 5-kilometer classical race with a time of 17:32.
Both will race again at the NCAA championships, with Hecker set for the 20-kilometer mass start freestyle and Ahmed preparing for the 15-kilometer mass start freestyle. Both those races are set for March 9 at the Rikert Nordic Center.
