Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The St. Scholastica football team held practice in pads for the first time this preseason on Thursday afternoon, with head coach Greg Carlson saying now his guys look like football players. The Saints have been picked as favorites this season in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), that after going (8-3) a year ago and qualifying for a second straight NCAA Division III tournament. That success, though, is not enough for the Saints, and that's led to the development of a new motto for the program --- "Play 12." "You play 10 regular season games, so the 11th game of the season is the first round of the NCAA playoffs," head coach Greg Carlson said. "To play 12, then, means you'd have to win that first playoff game. That seems to be the natural evolution of the goals for this program." St. Scholastica will open up the season on Sept. 7 on the road against Whitworth, with the team's home opener a week later against Iowa Wesleyan.
