Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) senior running back Austin Sikorski has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) North Division preseason offensive player of the year, it was announced on Thursday afternoon.
Sikorski, who was named a preseason All-American by USA College Football, finished fifth in rushing among NSIC players last season with 1,260 yards on 197 carries.
He averaged 96.9 yards per game and scored 16 total touchdowns for UMD, and he currently ranks fifth all-time among that school's leading rushers with 2,736 yards on the ground.
Just five days prior to Thursday's announcement, Sikorski was involved in an altercation in downtown Duluth that ended with him being stabbed in his lower right abdomen. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday evening and will join the team for fall camp starting Aug. 16, although his playing status remains unknown.
