Grand Rapids, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- It's been years of planning and days of setup, but the city of Grand Rapids is less than 48 hours from hosting Hockey Day Minnesota 2013 on the shores of Lake Pokegama.

City employees and countless volunteers started construction on the special outdoor rink late last week, and now it is ready to host the statewide celebration of hockey this upcoming Saturday.

That preparation, though, didn't come without challenges.

"We had that thaw last Thursday and Friday, so we weren't able to do anything with the ice," Grand Rapids Director of Parks and Recreation Dale Anderson said. "We started on the ice this Monday. We painted it, and then we've been building it ever since. We actually were able to have high school practice on it [Wednesday.]"

As part of the Hockey Day Minnesota 2013 celebration, the Grand Rapids boys' hockey team will host Benilde-St. Margaret's, the Hibbing-Chisholm boys' team will play Eagan, and the Grand Rapids-Greenway girls' team will host Hibbing-Chisholm.

Fox Sports North will be broadcasting from Lake Pokegama throughout the day on Saturday, with coverage starting at 9:00 a.m. and the first game scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
