Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- If Karen Stromme feels very comfortable moving into the interim athletic director role at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), perhaps that's because she's already been handling some of that job's workload.
Stromme is taking over, currently just on an interim basis, for the departing Bob Nielson, who had held the jobs of UMD athletic director and head football coach since 2003.
"When Bob had a dual role, there were times when he was really busy and many of shared in the workload," Stromme said. "We had to communicate, and as for the day-to-day duties of what an athletic director would do, we shared in the responsibilites."
Stromme has been with UMD since 1984, serving for 21 years as the head women's basketball coach before moving in 2003 to her role as assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator.
"When you work as closely as we did with him, and especially me," Stromme said, "you learn more than you ever thought that you knew. Also, by being in this department and this community so long, you live it instead of just work it. That's just become part of who I am."
