Abbotsford, BC (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Superior native Brett Olson has signed a contract with the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League (AHL), the team announced on Tuesday night.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team, but it means Olson will begin his professional hockey career in the league one step below the NHL.
The former Superior Spartan particiapted this summer in the development camp of the Minnesota Wild, but he said earlier this fall the impending lockout situation complicated matters with that team.
Olson graduated this past spring from Michigan Tech, where he played for four seasons and served the last two as that team's captain. He finished his collegiate career with 42 goals and 51 assists for the Huskies.
Former University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) defenseman Brady Lamb will also play this season with Abbotsford. The team's season opener is scheduled for October 12.
Had Abbotsford decided not to sign Olson, he had made plans to play the 2012-13 season with South Carolina of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
