Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- In its second year, the Superior Watercross Shootout played host to the International Watercross Association (IWA) for the first time, becoming the sixth race to join the summer circuit.

Saturday marked the first day of action with several heats of drag and oval racing at Barker's Island in Superior, Wisc. Championship heats will be held on Sunday afternoon.

Sixty five racers took to the water on Saturday, making it the second largest race on the IWA circuit.

As the snowmobiles graze atop the water, it's a sport unlike any other.

"When you first look at snowmobiles on water, you shouldn't think it should be able to be done, but we can do it really well," said IWA vice president Derek McPheeters. "We're actually pretty fast out there. We're faster than most boats. It's kind of an adrenaline rush, and then I get to use my snowmobile all-year round."
