Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Cloquet, Minn. native and current University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) assistant men's hockey coach Derek Plante has been named an assistant for the United States Under-18 team in the upcoming Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, it was announced on Monday.
Plante has been with the Bulldogs as an assistant coach the past three seasons, helping the team to a (65-39-17) overall record and the 2011 NCAA Division I championship.
In his senior season as a player at UMD, Plante captained the 1992-93 team to the program's last-ever Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular season championship.
He finished his four-year collegiate career with 219 points, which still ranks tied for second on UMD's all-time scoring list.
Plante then went on to an eight-year NHL career, producing 96 goals and 152 assists in 450 regular season games and winning a Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999.
The 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament is scheduled to be played Aug. 5-10 in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia.
