St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Minnesota Wild has made a qualifying offer to former University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) forward Justin Fontaine, meaning he cannot become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

The team announced the news on Tuesday afternoon, with the move meaning Minnesota has the option to match Fontaine's contract or draft pick compensation should he choose to sign with another NHL team.

Fontaine led Houston of the American Hockey League (AHL) in scoring this past season, totaling 23 goals and 33 assists in the regular season.

He played four seasons at UMD and left having totaled 62 goals and 102 assists, with his senior year being the national championship season of 2010-11.
