Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- It's not a sport for the faint of heart.

"I've seen some broken fingers and some dislocated thumbs, broken noses, and broken tailbones," said Lindzi Campbell.

"Last season we had two broken ankles," said bench coach Kate Minier.

"I got my first bloody nose," said Ellen Turner.

But that didn't stop more than 30 women from joining the Harbor City Roller Dames this year.

In their fifth season, the Nautikills are made up of skaters of all abilities.

"I had no skating experience at all," said Minier.

"I've been skating for a year and three months now," said Turner.

"I actually played hockey for 10 years," said Campbell.

And roller derby's a lot like hockey with the checking included.

"We really encourage just a full body check," said Minier.

Like anything else, with risk comes a few battle wounds.

"You just don't think about it until the next day, and you're counting your bruises or trying to remember what big fall you had," said Keely Johnson.

And then there are the crazy names on the backs of their jerseys. How exactly do they come up with those?

"Some of it is personality," said Campbell. "It usually has something to do with what someone does for a living or interests that they really have."

Those interests take the backburner during roller derby season.

"We practice three times a week," said Campbell.

"We work really hard to train for this," said Johnson.

They're always working hard for one another.

"As long as you're willing to put the time in and the commitment in, the team is so amazing and so friendly and welcoming," said Minier. "It was just an addiction. I mean, you take that first big hit or you get that first big hit, and you're like I'm in love with this. I have to keep going."
