McGregor, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Abby Hawkinson was just a middle–schooler, but McGregor basketball head coach Kris Rinta already could tell she was a special player.

"She knocked down a three as a seventh–grader and about halfway through that season she was in my starting line–up as a seventh–grader," said Rinta. "We could tell early."

Fast forward six years later, and Hawkinson has become a staple in the Mecuries' line–up.

Last week, the senior guard cemented her name in school history after surpassing 2,000 career points.

"It was nice," said Hawkinson. "It was kind of a relief though. I'm glad to have it behind me. Now we can focus on winning the next couple of games."

She can also focus her sights on a bigger goal, and that's breaking the school's all–time scoring record.

"I know Jake Root was the one before me that holds the record as of now. He was a great player. I remember growing up and watching him play. I never thought I'd be surpassing him in points."

She has to think about it now, though. Hawkinson is just 66 points shy of Root's record of 2,113 points, and there are six games left this regular season.

"I've always dreamt of getting up there and doing good. I never really thought it'd be this much."

If she does set the record, though, she know it better be by a large margin because there are a few more up and comers in McGregor basketball.

"There's a couple of them on the boys' team that are going to come after me."
