Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Fifteen current, future, and former University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) women's hockey players will skate in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) women's world championships, which will be played April 2-9 in Ottawa, Canada.

Current players Tea Villila (Finland), Marie Delarbe (Germany), Aleksandra Vafina (Russia), and Pernilla Winberg (Sweden) will all skate for their respective teams after playing the 2012-13 season in a UMD sweater.

Joining Winberg on the Sweden team will be former Bulldogs Elin Holmlov, Kim Martin, Erika Holst, Jenni Asserholt and future UMD skater Lina Backlin.

Canada, the tournament's defending champion, will have three former UMD players on its roster, those being Haley Irwin, Caroline Oullette, and Jocelyne Larocque.

Delarbe will be joined on the German squad by former UMD goaltender Jennifer Harss, and Vafina will team up with former Bulldog Iya Gavrilova on the Russian team.

Canada defeated the United States last year with a 5-4 overtime win to capture the gold medal, with former UMD skater Caroline Oullette providing the game-winning goal.

This year's tournament will get underway with a game between Russia and Germany on April 2, with the gold medal game set for April 9.
