(Northland's NewsCenter) --- The #6 ranked UMD Bulldogs women's hockey team opened the 2011 season with a win, defeating the Minnesota Whitecaps 2-1 in overtime on Friday night.
Freshman defender Tea Villila opened the scoring for UMD with a second period goal to tie the game at 1-1, which held until the end of regulation.
In overtime, it was junior Pernilla Winberg netting the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs, sending them a 2-1 victory.
Former UMD Bulldog Jenny Potter was a factor in the lone Whitecaps goal, providing the assist to Allie Thunstrom.
