Madison, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Barry Alvarez announced Thursday morning that he will return to the sidelines and coach the University of Wisconsin (UW) football team at the 2013 Rose Bowl, that after former head coach Bret Bielema accepted a position at the University of Arkansas earlier this week.

Alvarez, currently the UW athletics director, spent 16 seasons as the Badgers head coach and compiled the winningest record in school history at (118-73-4).

He also owns the best lifetime record in all of college football when it comes to bowl games (among coaches with at least 11 appearances), maintaining an (8-3) record in those contests.

Alvarez was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1999, and he will become just the second person to coach in the game after being enshrined.

The Badgers will be playing in a third straight Rose Bowl, this time going against Stanford with the game set for Jan. 1, 2013 in Pasadena, Calif.

Alvarez said a national search for Bielema's long-term successor is already underway and the interview process will begin sometime next week.
