Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The last time before this season Katrina and Jessica Newman played basketball together, they were winning the first-ever state championship for the Barnum Bombers. Now, those two are reunited at UMD.
"We both had our struggle last year not playing with each other," Katrina said, "so it's nice to have her in practice and see her all the time. It's good to play with her again."
"She knows me. She knows my body language," Jessica said. "Just being able to play with her again is really awesome."
Siblings play high school sports together all the time. That's just the nature of where they live. The Newmans, though, planned to play college basketball for quite some time.
"Katrina deciding to come here meant I pretty much decided I was going to come here too because winning that state championship with her was an unbelievable experience," Jessica said. "I just want to win more games with her."
If they are to win more, the sisters will do within a system similar to that they played in high school.
"They come out of such a good program in Barnum in terms of a lot of the philosophical beliefs," UMD head coach Annette Wiles said, "in terms of the pressure man-to-man, really trying to extend defenses, and trying to transition to easy offensive scores."
The sisters are great competitors on the floor, but say sibling rivalry has never been a major part in their relationship.
"If we play one-on-one, it's competitive," Katrina said. "If we're on the same team, though, we look out for each other and both want to win."
Katrina was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week for her recent efforts with the Bulldogs. Last week, she averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game for UMD.
