Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The UMD women's hockey team missed out on a bid to the NCAA national tournament Sunday afternoon, one day after losing to #2-ranked Minnesota in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) championship.
Eight teams were selected Sunday to participate in the tournament, which will culminate March 16 and 18 with the Frozen Four at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth.
There are three WCHA teams in the NCAA field, all of which played with UMD in the WCHA Final Face-Off this past weekend. Wisconsin enters the tournament as the #1 seed, Minnesota enters as the #2 seed, and North Dakota enters as the #3 seed.
UMD has the most NCAA national championships of any school in the country with five, and Wisconsin is second with four.
