Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- When talking of UW-Superior's recent application to become a member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), the numbers seem to support the basic reasons laid out by the school's athletic department for the possible move.

As a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), UW-Superior's average road trip is 248 miles and three trips are longer than 300 miles.

With a move to the UMAC, UW-Superior's average road trip would decrease to 158 miles and its longest trip would be the 245-mile trek to face Martin Luther.

Those numbers fit the "decrease in travel [...] as well as financial considerations" part of UW-Superior's written statement explaining its reasoning for applying to the UMAC.

DISTANCE TO WIAC SCHOOLS
UW-Eau Claire --- 150 miles
UW-La Crosse --- 233 miles
UW-Oshkosh --- 331 miles
UW-Platteville --- 326 miles
UW-River Falls --- 174 miles
UW-Stevens Point --- 263 miles
UW-Stout --- 147 miles
UW-Whitewater --- 361 miles

DISTANCE TO UMAC SCHOOLS
Bethany Lutheran --- 234 miles
Crown --- 181 miles
Martin Luther --- 245 miles
Minnesota-Morris --- 236 miles
North Central --- 153 miles
Northland --- 65 miles
Northwestern --- 149 miles
St. Scholastica --- 6 miles

Another of the listed reasons was "competitive balance," which is widely associated with school size compared to other institutions in any particular conference.

UW-Superior has 2,556 undergraduate students for the 2013-14 academic year --- graduate students are ineligible to play Division III sports --- making it the smallest school in the WIAC and putting it well below the 10,026 average of the conference's other eight schools.

The UMAC, on the other hand, has an average undergraduate enrollment of 1,350 students, and UW-Superior would be the second-largest institution there behind only St. Scholastica.

UNDERGRADUATE SIZE OF WIAC SCHOOLS
UW-Eau Claire --- 10,545
UW-La Crosse --- 8,582

UW-River Falls --- 6,159
UW-Stevens Point --- 8,926
UW-Stout --- 8,184
UW-Whitewater --- 9,866

UNDERGRADUATE SIZE OF UMAC SCHOOLS

The move to the UMAC still needs to be voted on by the league's Council of Presidents, which commissioner Cory Borchardt confirmed to NNCNOW.com will happen sometime before June 1.
