The St. Scholastica volleyball team is one of just 75 NCAA Division III volleyball programs to have earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2009-10 season; it was announced on Tuesday.

The Saints, who captured the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship last season, had the best team grade-point-average in the conference at 3.52. They also had a total of 10 athletes make academic all-conference.

Two other UMAC schools also received recognition by the AVCA: Martin Luther and Northwestern College.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The Saints will begin their 2010 season at home when they host the CSS Mini-Tournament in Reif Gymnasium on September 1st. Action starts 9 a.m.
