DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica Saints baseball team clinched its 15th straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship with a double header sweep of conference rival Northwestern College. The Saints won game one by a 5-1 final and took game two 2-1.

The Saints (32-5, 20-1 UMAC) were led by pitching on the day, beginning with a six shutout innings by Matt Lewis (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in game one. Lewis allowed just six Northwestern (13-22, 10-10 UMAC) hits on the afternoon and struck out six while walking just one.

Lewis got all the run support he would need in the second when Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) drove in Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) and Scott Greening (Antigo, Wis./Antigo HS (Mesabi CC)) with two outs in the inning to put the Saints up 2-0.

In the third, Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) continued his torrid pace with a double down the right field line before coming around to score on a Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) single.

Game two proved to be an old-fashioned pitcher's duel as a pair of freshmen collided with the Saints' Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) hurling opposite the Eagles' Cory Larson.

Davis threw five shutout innings, striking out four while scattering six Northwestern hits. Larson tossed six innings, giving up just two runs on the afternoon. Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) earned the victory for CSS with two innings out of the bullpen.

After being held hitless through the first two innings, Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) drove a single to left before coming around to score on a double by Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS), who drove in his third run on the afternoon. CSS had a hit in each of the next three innings, but could not string a longer rally together.

It was the usual suspects coming through for CSS after a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth tied the game, as Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) led off the inning with a single before being sent home on a double by Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), who also notched his third RBI of the afternoon.

With Northwestern threatening in the seventh, Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) started a slick double play, eliminating a lead-off single at second as Taylor Kauweloa grounded out to end the game.

The Saints will await their opponent as the top seed in the UMAC Postseason Tournament beginning on Thursday at Wade Stadium.
