Connolly, Place Named UMD's Outstanding Senior Athletes

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- UMD senior hockey player Jack Connolly and senior distance runner Morgan Place were named the school's most outstanding senior athletes at the "Dinner with Champions" on Wednesday night in Duluth.

Connolly, a Duluth Marshall graduate, helped the Bulldogs men's hockey team to its first-ever NCAA national title in 2011 and this past season became the school's fifth Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner.

Place, meanwhile, holds the school record with eight All-American selections and has qualified for 11 NCAA Division II national meets.

Volleyball's Allison Fanta, hockey's Kenny Reiter, and basketball's Emma Van Winkle all received the E.L. Rasmussen award as UMD's top scholar-athletes.

Football's Cory Flesch, meanwhile, was presented with the Shjon Podein community service award for his strong humanitarian conitrbutions to the Duluth community.
