Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- UW-Superior last played an intercollegiate football game in September 1992 --- now, after more than 20 years without football, the time may have come for that sport to return to the Yellowjackets campus.
UW-Superior Athletics Director Steve Nelson said bringing football back wasn't an option as a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), but with the school moving into the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) in the fall of 2015, he can once again entertain the conversation.
"I told our Chancellor, 'You know they're going to ask they question.' She said, 'Well, never say never,'" Nelson said. "We understand what it can do to your campus and the culture of your campus. I was here when football was here. There's something about football that's very intriguing and nice to have on campus."
Nelson made clear there are no immediate plans to add football to the UW-Superior athletic offerings, but he did say talks will be had in the coming months about the possibility.
The UMAC currently has five full-time member schools and five associate schools that participate in football, including UW-Superior's geographic neighbor in St. Scholastica.
