Duluth Native Forbort Signs ELC with Kings

Los Angeles, CA (NNCNOW.com) --- Duluth, Minn. native and North Dakota junior defenseman Derek Forbort has signed an entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings, forgoing his final year of collegiate eligibility.

The team confirmed the news on Friday night, issuing a news release to say the 21-year-old has inked a three-year deal in Los Angeles.

Forbort himself hinted at the news earlier in the night, tweeting a thank you to the fans and community of Grand Forks, N.D.

"Can't thank the awesome people of Grand Forks enough for everything over the past three years," Forbort tweeted. "What a special place."

His family members also took to Twitter on Friday night, with younger brother Jack offering his congratulations on the signing.

"Congrats to @derek4bort for signing today! #proudbrother," tweeted his brother, currently a senior at Duluth East.

Forbort was a first-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, taken 15th overall by the Kings after playing his senior high school year with the U.S. National Development Team.

The former Duluth East Greyhound finished with four goals and 13 assists for North Dakota in the 2012-13 season, helping North Dakota to the NCAA Division I tournament.

Forbort will likely report to the Kings' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Manchester on April 6, that according to a Friday report by Helene Elliott of the L.A. Times.
