Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Freshman running back Brian Lucas had big shoes to fill with the defending champion UMD Bulldogs football team this fall.

Three pairs, too.

Lucas and other untested backs were tasked with replacing seniors Isaac Odim, Brad Foss, and Brian Hanson in the UMD backfield this season.

Last Saturday, Lucas proved himself for the first of what the team hopes is many times, rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown in a 20-12 win over #8 Augustana.

"It was a lot of firsts for me," Lucas said. "My first collegiate game, my first carry, my first touchdown, and I've never had a crowd that big. It was something else. I've never experienced anything like that, so I'm glad we came out with that 'W.'"

Lucas and the #1 Bulldogs will now open the conference part of their schedule, hosting Upper Iowa this Saturday at Malosky Stadium. That game can be seen live in the Northland on the My 9 Sports Network, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
