Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Grand Rapids, Minn. native Austin Pohlen is no stranger to the football field, but the sight of him at Malosky Stadium on Wednesday afternoon was, nonetheless, a little odd.

Pohlen was participating in his first practice with the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) football team, that after he announced last week he was switching basketball for football with the Bulldogs.

"I'm going to be rusty in every aspect," Pohlen said. "It's more about the little things, getting the playbook down and getting to know the guys. I'm just going to throw the ball around a little bit and see how it feels."

He is now one of six quarterbacks vying to replace graduated starter Chase Vogler, with head coach Curt Wiese saying Pohlen will get a chance to compete for the job.

"He's going to have a chance to knock a little rust off this spring and get his feet wet in our offense," Wiese said. "Headed into summer, at least this will give a little bit of a base moving forward."

Pohlen played his freshman season with the UMD men's basketball team, appearing in 27 games and averaging just 1.2 points per contest.
