Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Duluth native and 2011 All-American Garth Heikkinen will be one of five captains this upcoming fall for the UMD football team, which will be entering its 80th season of collegiate competition.
Heikkinen will join quarterback Chase Vogler, safety Cameron Harper, tight end Ben Helmer, and defensive end Joe Akey as the five leaders of the Bullodgs this upcoming year.
Vogler joined Heikkinen as a 2011 All-American selection by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), and all five newly-named captains are previous all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) honorees.
Akey topped the 2010 Bulldogs team with 6.5 quarterback sacks before missing last year with an injury, and both Harper and Helmer are entering their third year of starting duty for UMD.
UMD's first game of 2012 is scheduled for August 30 on the road to Southwest Minnesota State, and the team's first home game is set for September 8 against Winona State.
The Bulldogs went (11-3) a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals before falling to Wayne State.
