St. Scholastica Loses to Whitworth in Season Opener

Spokane, WA (NNCNOW.com) --- The St. Scholastica football team struggled in its season opener on Saturday afternoon as Whitworth University capitalized on four Saints turnovers and cruised to the win, 36-7 in Spokane, Wash.

The Pirates scored two touchdowns in the first quarter including runs from both Griffin Hare and DJ Tripoli. Whitworth continued the scoring in the second half with two more scores.

Whitworth scored 21 points off of CSS turnovers. Tyler Harper finished 14-for-24 for 72 yards while Jake Jensen rushed for just 34 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Ian Papenheim scored the lone touchdown for the Saints with a 19 yard pass to Cory Gebhard. Papenheim relieved starter Tyler Harper in the fourth quarter.

Gebhard led all receivers with 5 catches for 55 yards.

St. Scholastica finished with 200 total yards while Whitworth totaled over 400 yards and just one turnover.

The Saints (0-1) resume action on Saturday, Sept. 14 in their home opener at 4:30 p.m. against Iowa Wesleyan.
