Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- New St. Scholastica defensive coordinator Allen Smith knows the program and knows the players, making him an obvious choice to take over for the departing Tom Parkevich.

"I love it, that they stayed within the program," senior defensive lineman Chas Lemon said. "I like Coach Smith a lot. He knows the players really well, so he knew what he had to work with. We're just building from there."

Smith is one of only two coaches in the St. Scholastica program to be with the team since its inception, with the other being head coach Greg Carlson.

He spent the past four seasons as the defensive backs and linebackers coach, and he says his plan is to bring a hard-working attitude to the Saints' defense in 2012.

"We can expect guys to play hard. That's the one thing that we can guarantee," Smith said. "I can't guarantee that we'll be an outstanding defense, but I can guarantee that we will work hard. We will play hard, and people will respect us as a defense."

St. Scholastica opens the 2012 regular season on September 1, with a 1:00 p.m. game against Whitworth at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth.
