Colorado Springs, CO (NNCNOW.com) --- Jim Scherr has resigned as commissioner of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) in order to join the inuagural European Games, NCHC chairman Brian Faison announced on Friday afternoon.

Scherr, who had served as NCHC commissioner since January 2012, will join the European Games immediately as its chief operation officer. The inaugural tournament will be held in June 2015 and will feature more than 10,000 athletes from 49 nations.

“Jim was presented with what is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said NCHC treasurer Ken Ralph. "While it is difficult to see him go, we understand his decision. With what has already been done with our bylaws, operating manuals, office setup and personnel, officiating program, and championship site, we are in a great position for our inaugural season.”

A search for a new commissioner will begin immediately, according to Faison. The inaugural NCHC season is set to start in the 2013-14 season, with the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) acting as one of the league's founding members.
