Superior, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) ---It was January 9, 2005 when superior high school grad and UWS student Tony Gigliotti lost his life in a car accident along Interstate 35.

This weekend, basketball players from far and wide got together for the annual 3-on-3 tournament in Tony G's honor.

This is the seventh year of the memorial basketball tournament, held at Mertz Morterelli Gymnasium on the UWS campus.

A record 97 teams taking part this year, but organizers say with a late addition that could be bumped to 98.

Last year, the tournament raised more than $8,000 for the Tony Gigliotti Scholarship Fund at UWS.

One of Tony's best friends, Mark Johnson, has been heavily involved with all seven years of this tournament, and he said it's become something Tony G would have liked.

"Tony was a guy that brought different groups of people together and just could be anybody's friend, so this is a true reflection of who Tony way," Johnson said. "It's turned into an event that Tony would be proud of and we're all very proud of as well. It's become more of a community event now, where we bring in people from other communities and make it a good time for everyone."
