Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- After six seasons of regularly coming to watch practices and games, Sister Lisa Maurer is now an official part of St. Scholastica football --- as an assistant coach.
Sister Maurer joined the team on Sunday for its first fall practice of 2014 and will work primarily with the kickers and punters, something she said seems natural after all her hours watching the team since its inception.
"The field is right outside the back door of our monastery," she said, "so I would come out here all the time. Before I entered the monastery, I was a teacher and a coach, so athletics is in my blood. The sound of the whistles would draw me out here to practice."
Sister Maurer is the first female football coach in the school's history and said the idea came from new head coach Kurt Ramler after she met him for the first time this past winter.
