Cloquet, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The Fond du Lac Thunder football team will open the 2011 season Saturday night, one year after posting a program-best five wins in 2010.
The Thunder will take on nationally-ranked Central Lakes College on Saturday night at St. Cloud State University, with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m.
Fond du Lac football is entering only its fifth year of existence, and posted a program-best (5-4) record a year ago.
This year, returning players are hoping the Thunder can do one better in 2011 and qualify for the Minnesota College Athletic Conference playoffs.
"I think the postseason in within reach," Thunder head coach Keith Turner said. "We have to keep the young men focused. It's one game at a time, and it's one quarter at a time."
"We've just got to make our tackles," Thunder sophomore linebacker and Saginaw native David Hjelle said. "I think we're pretty good at pursuing the ball, and we really worked hard at recruiting to get a better defensive line. I think that's going to be the key spot this year."
"I think we'll be better than last year," Thunder sophomore kicker and Cloquet native Anthony Wood said. "It's been a good training camp and having Coach Turner return, we're looking good."
"We've got to just stick together as a team," Thunder sophomore quarterback Michael Davis said. "We have to follow what the coaches have us doing and continue to move forward and try to better that year."
The Thunder will play their first home game of 2011 on Saturday, September 10 against Minnesota West Community College at Bromberg Field in Cloquet.
