Sioux City, IA (NNCNOW.com) --- University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men's hockey recruit Blake Heinrich has opted to sign with Portland of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and forfeit his NCAA eligibility, the team announced on its website Monday afternoon.

Heinrich currently plays with Sioux City of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and will join Portland at the end of that team's season, meaning he will not be allowed to play for the Bulldogs. He had signed a national letter of intent with UMD this past November and was expected next winter as a freshman.

“We have had discussions with Blake since drafting him about becoming a Winterhawk and are excited to announce that he will join us at the end of the year," Portland head coach Mike Johnson said. "He is a dynamic defenseman who is a perfect fit for our style of play. I expect he will be a big part of our future over the next two seasons as we rebuild our defense."

The Cambridge, Minn. native has six goals and eight assists in 31 games this season for Sioux City, that after totaling three goals and 17 assists in 42 games last year.
