Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Outgoing University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) senior Chris Vandervest has been named one of 20 finalists for the inaugural Cliff Harris Award, which will be handed out to the top defensive player from the nation's small colleges.

Nominees are chosen from NCAA Division III, NCAA Division III, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), with the winner to be announced on Dec. 24.

Vandervest was a three-year starter on the UMD defensive line, finishing his senior season leading the team with five quarterback sacks and 18 tackles for a loss. He was also second on the team with 55 total tackles and added two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned 91 yards for a touchdown.

The Green Bay, Wis. native was a three-time all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) selection and was picked this year to the 2013 Daktronics all-Super Region #3 second team.
