Philadelphia, PA (NNCNOW.com) --- The Union College men's hockey team scored four first-period goals and outshot Minnesota 42-36 en route to beating the Gophers 7-4 to claim their first-ever NCAA Division I national championship.

Justin Kloos put the Gophers on the board first before Shayne Gostisbehere answered. Sam Warning then notched a goal to put Minnesota on top 2-1. The Dutchmen responded with three goals of their own.

Late in the third period, the Gophers trailed 5-3 until Hudson Fasching cut the deficit in half. Union would add the last two tallies including an empty-netter to clinch the national crown.

It was Minnesota's 11th appearance in the national championship while Union made its title game debut.
