Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) football team has five co-captains for the 2012 season, meaning the team will very heavily rely on its leaders to help the Bulldogs back to the NCAA Division II tournament.
"We've got a group of captains who I think will provide great leadership," UMD head coach Bob Nielson said. "It's the first time I've had five co-captains on one of the football teams I've been associated with, which tells you a little bit about the respect that senior group has."
Quarterback Chase Vogler, offensive lineman Garth Heikkinen, tight end Ben Helmer, defensive end Joe Akey, and safety Cameron Harper are the five seniors that will serve as co-captains for UMD in the 2012 season.
The Bulldogs finished the 2011 season with an (11-3) overall record, winning at least a share of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) title for the fourth straight year and making it to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.
The first game of the 2012 season for UMD is August 30 when the team visits Southwest Minnesota State. The Bulldogs' first home game is September 8 against Winona State, with that and every other home game being shown live in the Northland on the My 9 Sports Network.
