Grand Rapids, MI (NNCNOW.com) --- Jesse Root scored just nine seconds into overtime on Friday afternoon, giving the #4-seeded Yale men's hockey team a 3-2 win over #1-seeded Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament.

Ben Marshall took the overtime opening faceoff deep into his own end, but Kenny Agostino forced a turnover and passed it in front to an uncovered Root, who beat freshman Adam Wilcox for the game winner.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two periods with goals from Agostino and Gus Young, but the Gophers came back to tie it in the third with tallies from Nate Schmidt and Zach Budish.

Root's goal is the fastest overtime winner in the history of the NCAA tournament, and it moves Yale into the West Regional championship game on March 31.

Minnesota ends the season with an overall record of (26-9-5).
