Superior, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) -- The UW-Superior men's basketball program will be coached this upcoming season by Paul Eberhardt, it was announced on Thursday morning.

The hire comes following a two-month national search following the resignation of Matt Siverling, who had been the team's head coach the past two seasons.

"This search presented us with arguably the deepest pool of applicants we've had for a coaching vacancy in my time here as athletics director," UW-Superior athletics director Steve Nelson said. "After careful consideration, we felt that Paul was the best fit to lead our program going forward."

Eberhardt most recently served as athletics director and dean of students at Ellsworth Community College, but he comes to the Yellowjackets with 12 years coaching experience.

He spent two years as an assistant coach at both UW-River Falls and Scottsdale Community College, that before accepting the head coaching job at Scottsdale and leading that program for eight seasons.

"This is a great opportunity for me to get back to the [Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,] where I got my coaching start," Eberhardt said. "I loved my time in the league, and I'm thrilled to be coaching in the best Division III conference the country."

Eberhardt is the sixth head coach in the past 10 years and will officially start his duties on August 13, but he said in a statement on Thursday that his work for the upcoming season has already begun.

"I need to talk with my players and not only get comfortable with them, but make sure that they are comfortable with me," Eberhardt said. "I need to look after the guys that I have there right now."

Eberhardt is a 1997 graduate of Winona State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in history, before earning his teaching certification in 2000 while from UW-River Falls. He then earned his master's degree in education, with an emphasis in sports leadership, from Virginia Commonwealth in 2006.

The new coach takes over for Matt Siverling, who resigned in May to take the head coaching position with the UW-Eau Claire men's basketball program. In his two seasons with the team, Siverling led the Yellowjackets to a (29-24) overall record.
