Saints Battle Back, Drop 2012 Season Opener

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The St. Scholastica football team showed a lot of heart on Saturday afternoon, but in the end the Saints fell 28-13 to Whitworth in both teams' 2012 season opener.

The Pirates jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime behind a pair of touchdown runs by Ronnie Davis. He finished with 32 carries for 161 yards in the winning effort for Whitworth.

The vistors extended the lead in the third quarter, scoring on another run by Davis and a 33-yard scoring catch by Jake DeGooyer.

It wasn't until midway through the fourth quarter that St. Scholastica finally found the end zone, with Tyler Harper throwing a 6-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Specht.

Harper later found Nick Thiry for a 20-yard score that closed the game's scoring, with the Saints ending up on the losing end of a 28-13 final.

The Saints finished with 249 yards of total offense compared to Whitworth's 359 yards, with the Pirates outrushing the Saints by 130 yards in the contest.

St. Scholastica is now (0-1) in the 2012 season and will take on Eureka College next Saturday, with that game set for 1:00 p.m. at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth.
