Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The St. Scholastica football team has lost in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament in each of the past two seasons, its 11th game of the season. So this year, the Saints have adopted a slogan of "Play 12."
That 12th game would be a second-round contest in the NCAA Division III tournament, clearly the goal in 2013 of a team that has won the past two Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championships.
The Saints opened spring practices this past Saturday in pursuit of that goal, with head coach Greg Carlson optimistic about his program's future.
"I think spring is a great opportunity for the non-starters to position themseleves up the rung one or two notches," Carlson said, "so that when they come back in the fall, maybe they can be competing for a starting role."
"For the starters, we want them to get better," Carlson continued. "They need to set the pace for practice, and they need to set the temp for us as a team."
St. Scholastica will have padded practice for the first time on May 2, that before taking a two-week break for exams before coming back to practice before their spring game in Canada on May 18.
