Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Superior native and St. Scholastica's head athletic trainer Kim Moncel flew out of Duluth on Sunday afternoon, bound for the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

Moncel will be working in the United States athletic clinic, one of six people not associated with a specific sport to be selected for that duty.

"I was pretty excited. I never really thought I would go to the Olympics," Moncel said in April after learning of her selection. "We'll do anything from simple first aid stuff, manual therapy, strength training, or physical therapy. They do a lot of massage and soft tissue work to get them prepped for the games, and then we will also evaluate anyone with injuries during the games."

The Superior native officially joined St. Scholastica as its head athletic trainer in 2008, but she has been working with the school since 1997 through SMDC (now Essentia Health).

Moncel also has experience working with Northland high school athletes, having served as the athletic trainer at both Superior and Northwestern.

Even before boarding the plane on Sunday, Moncel seemed in disbelief that she was actually selected to work at the Olympics.

"To be honest, I really thought I wasn't going to be invited because my team hadn't qualified," Moncel said," so when I got the email, I had to read it a couple times. Does it mean I'm in the pool of people they are going to select from, or am I actually going? I read it three times to make sure I was actually going. It was pretty exciting. I got on the phone and started calling people pretty fast."

Moncel's has previously worked with the United States handball team and the women's baseball team, but this will be her first-ever trip to the Olympic Games.
