Whitewater, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- An unearned run in the seventh inning proved to be the difference on Wednesday afternoon as the #6-seeded St. Scholastica baseball team beat #1-seeded St. Thomas 1-0 in the first game of the NCAA Division III Midwest regional tournament at Prucha Field in Whitewater, Wis.
Andy Schwantes provided the only run of the game for St. Scholastica, that coming after he singled to lead off the seventh before two throwing errors allowed him to score following a Saints bunt.
Kyle Jensen earned the win on the hill for the Saints, allowing no runs on just four hits while striking out six batters across six innings. Cloquet, Minn. native Thomas Rogers came on for the final three innings, earning the save while holding the Tommies scoreless and allowing only two hits.
Andy Schwantes and Kyle Flagstad were the lone St. Scholastica players with multiple hits, both finishing 2-for-4 on the day. Duluth, Minn. native Parker Olson joined Tyler Henderson and Jordan O'Neill as Saints to register one hit in the winning effort.
St. Scholastica is now (28-9) overall this year and will next play the loser of a game between #3-seeded UW-Whitewater and #4-seeded Case Western in the double elimination tournament. That game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on May 16 at Prucha Field.
