Virginia, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The Virginia school board on Monday hired three new head coaches to fill open positions in the Blue Devils athletic program.

Tony Norland, already the head boys track coach, was hired to take on the boys and girls cross country coaching responsibilities as well.

""Under Tony's leadership the boys track team achieved great success this year," Virginia activities director Kerry Bidle said. "He has a lot of enthusiasm and the students respond to his coaching style. Tony will do a great job with the track and cross country programs."

Meanwhile, Joe Mellgren was hired to take over the Virginia wrestling program for longtime head coach Rick Erickson.

"Joe is determined to get elementary students in the cooperative schools more involved. He has accepted the challenge of trying to bring in new students to help build the wrestling program," Bidle said. "Joe's enthusiasm and determination will most certainly have a positive affect on the program."

And finally, Reed Larson was hired to replace the retiring Keith Hendrickson as head coach of the Virginia boys hockey team.

"My wife and I are tremendously excited to be back in the area near friends and family," Larson said. "I'm extremely excited to get a chance to teach and coach at Virginia High School and be a part of their great tradition. I can't wait to get started."

Larson is a 1997 graduate of Grand Rapids High School and a 2003 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

"We are very fortunate to have Reed Larson join our faculty and coaching staff," Bidle said. "His experience, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game will be a great asset to our program. We're excited to have a quality person like Mr. Larson to teach and coach in our district."
