St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Timing and location are among the changes announced Thursday by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) concerning the state boys' and girls' basketball tournaments, with some of the modifications set to start in 2014.
Starting in 2014 and lasting through 2016, the boys' tournament will be played a week before the girls' tournament, a flip-flop from the traditional tournament schedule.
In 2017 and 2018, though, the schedule will revert back to before the changes and the boys will play the week after the girls.
The proposal accepted by the MSHSL board will allow the boys' tournament to be held at Target Center and Williams Arena from 2014-2016, while the girls' tournament those years will be split the following week between those two locations and Mariucci Arena.
In 2017 and 2018, the locations for each tournament will remain the same, but the boys' tournament will again be played the week following the girls' tournament.
The changes come primarily because of Target Center's agreement with the upcoming National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) to host the league's postseason tournament, which will fall on either the second or third full week of March.
The MSHSL decision was complicated further by Williams Arena's decision to reserve dates in future years to potentially host early-round games in either the NCAA or NIT men's and women's basketball tournaments.
