Chisholm, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The high school football field in Chisholm was officially renamed on Saturday afternoon for 1963 graduate and former University of Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi.
The Bluestreaks will now play their games at Joel Maturi Field, named after a man who said though better players came before and after his time in high school, everyone would always have Chisholm in common.
Maturi played football, basketball, and baseball at Chisholm before attending college at Notre Dame. He was hired as athletics director at the University of Minnesota and held that position until retiring this past February.
The Chisholm, Minn. native was integral in arranging the construction of TCF Bank Stadium, and the Golden Gophers won NCAA championship in both men's and women's hockey during his tenure.
