Duluth Native Welinski Invited to WJC Camp

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Former Duluth East defenseman Andy Welinski was one of 46 players named Monday to participate in the United States' World Junior Championship evaluation camp.

Welinski is one of 17 defenseman invited to the camp, which will take place August 4-11 in Lake Placid, NY.

The Duluth native helped the Green Bay Gamblers this season to a league-best regular season record at (47-9-4) and the United States Hockey League (USHL) postseason championship.

Welinski tallied 15 goals and 22 assists this season for the Green Bay, with that goal total ranking first among USHL defenseman.

He was named earlier this year as both the USHL defenseman of the year and by USA Hockey as the national junior player of the year.

Welinski was in 2011 was a third round pick of Anaheim in the NHL Entry Draft, and he is expected to join the roster of the UMD Bulldogs starting in the 2012-13 season.
