Eight Locals Taken in 2013 NAHL Entry Draft

(NNCNOW.com) --- Eight players with connections to the Northland were taken in the 2013 North American Hockey League (NAHL) Entry Draft, with several of them being selected in the early rounds.

Hermantown defenseman Jake Zeleznikar was the first local to be taken, going with the fourth overall pick to Coulee Region. Zeleznikar had 11 goals and 36 assists in 2012-13 while leading the Hawks to a runner-up finish at the MSHSL Class A tournament.

Duluth East forward Jack Forbort was then taken with the 33rd overall selection by Minot, that after he totaled 23 goals and 41 assists in 2012-13 while helping the Greyhounds to a third place finish at the MSHSL Class AA tournament.

Grand Rapids forward Travis Underwood was the next Northlander off the board, going 41st overall to Brookings. He actually spent the 2012-13 season in the NAHL, totaling eight goals and 12 assists in 22 games played with four different teams.

Duluth East forward Alex Toscano was then selected with the 68th overall pick by Bismarck, that after he finished his senior high school season with 24 goals and 36 assists.

Duluth Denfeld forward Alex Thompson, Duluth East defenseman Meirs Moore, Hibbing-Chisholm forward Adam Johnson, and Hermantown forward Bo Gronseth were the other four locals taken in the draft, with all going in rounds 5-9 on Tuesday afternoon.
